The Texas Research Society on Alcoholism (TRSA) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote research that can lead the way toward prevention and treatment of alcoholism and other chemical dependencies; to extend knowledge of the scientific database; and to promote communication among Texas area research scientists. TRSA's overriding goal is to see the puzzle of alcoholism solved.

HISTORY
TRSA was established in 1979 by six research scientists, working in the alcohol field, who wanted to develop a unified, concerted effort to promote alcohol research in the state of Texas. The Society is supported by dues, grants and donations; and is administered by an unpaid board of directors and a minimal staff..

OBJECTIVES
Education: To accurately inform the public about the scientific facts of alcoholism and other chemical dependencies.

Research: To help find the fundamental causes of addictive diseases and effective prevention, intervention and treatment for these diseases.

Appropriate influence: To see that accurate scientific information is used in the formulation of laws and regulations regarding the manufacture, distribution, use and abuse of mood altering substances; and to gain an equitable share of research funds for alcoholism and other addictive disease research.

ACTIVITIES
The annual Scientific Meeting of the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism provides a meeting place for scientists and clinicians- working in the various fields of alcoholism, alcohol abuse and other chemical dependencies- to interact on a professional and personal level. The meeting gives members the opportunity to present their latest findings in alcohol research. The format of the meeting consists of oral presentations, poster sessions and a luncheon keynote speaker. Members and non-members are welcome to register for the meeting which is held in February.

TRSA's Pro/Am Golf Tournament is a fund-raiser held in November at the Cedar Creek Golf Course in San Antonio. The tournament, which offers cash prizes to professionals and merchandise prizes to amateurs, is funded by entry fees, individual donations and corporate sponsors. This is TRSA' sole non-research annual fund-raiser.

STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS
TRSA's John P. McGovern Medical Student Fellowship program's purpose is to provide a graduate, medical, or dental student with funds to complete a summer research project involving alcohol or drug abuse/addiction, thereby potentially interesting the student in a career in this field. The student must be sponsored by a TRSA member who is currently involved in alcohol or drug abuse/addiction research.

HOW TO JOIN
TRSA membership is available for a nominal fee of $25 annually. Membership entitles you to discounts for all TRSA sponsored activities. Most importantly, TRSA members have the opportunity to support alcohol/chemical dependency research and the scientists working in the field. To join simply send your contact information to TRSA with your check for $25.
