STUDENT MERIT / JUNIOR INVESTIGATOR MEETING AWARDS
2012 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

            The Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) will sponsor a limited number of Student Merit / Junior Investigator Meeting Awards. Awards are funded by a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) conference grant. The awards are intended to help defray costs associated with attendance at the 2012 RSA Scientific Meeting being held in San Francisco. Awards will either cover the cost of meeting registration only or meeting registration and a minimal travel stipend.

An application (see below) must be completed by all individuals who wish to apply for a Student Merit Award (primarily intended for graduate students) or Junior Investigator Meeting Award (intended for postdoctoral fellows and trainees no more than 4 years past Ph.D. or M.D. at the time of the meeting). Selection of awardees will be based on the merit of their abstract and stated financial need. Additional consideration will be given for students and junior investigators from under-represented minority groups. Preference is also afforded to individuals who are members of RSA.

ALL APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS ON RESEARCH SUPPORT PROGRAMS WHICH WILL BE OFFERED DURING THE MEETING.

REQUIREMENTS:  

STUDENT MERIT AWARD:  Graduate Student applicants must be the presenting author of an abstract accepted for presentation or a symposium speaker at the 2012 RSA Meeting. A limited number of outstanding undergraduate students may also be considered (undergraduates need not be presenting a paper; however, only one applicant per abstract will be accepted.)

JUNIOR INVESTIGATOR MEETING AWARD:  All applicants must be the presenting author of an abstract accepted for presentation or a symposium speaker at the 2012 RSA Meeting. Only one applicant per abstract will be accepted.

DEADLINE:  Complete applications must be submitted by January 13, 2012.Awards will be announced in late May.

NOTE:Receiving an Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Award does not preclude you from receiving an RSA Student Merit / Junior Investigator Award. You may apply for both awards.

PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE UNTIL YOU HAVE

HEARD ABOUT THE AWARD – LATE FEES WILL BE WAIVED.

ONLINE APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Before you begin, be sure to have the following materials ready for inclusion:

1)     Your original 1- page abstract – as submitted for poster presentation – 3050 character (w/spaces) limit – includes title, authors, affiliations and abstract. YOUR POSTER ABSTRACT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED ONLINE BY THE JANUARY 9 DEADLINE.

2)     Your justification letter – 5000 character (w/spaces) limit

3)     STUDENTS and JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS (no more than 4 years past degree at the time of the meeting) need to e-mail verification letters to debbyrsa@sbcglobal.net. See application for more details. Application will not be complete until verification is received and receipt confirmed.
