Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Awards
for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows

2011 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

The Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) announces the continuation of the Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Awards to be given at the 2011 RSA Annual Scientific Meeting. Separate awards will be given for students and postdoctoral fellows (no more than 5 years past Ph.D. or M.D. at the time of the meeting) who will present their research as a first author at the RSA meeting in the two broad areas of (1) biomedical and (2) psychosocial research.

There will be up to 6 awards (monetary and plaque) presented.  The final decision of the number of awards to be made depends on the number of applications received in each category and the quality of the work represented. All students and eligible postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply for consideration for these awards. An application must be completed by all individuals who wish to apply for an Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Award.

Finalists will be required to present their research during an evening paper session. Awards will be based on originality of research, significance to the field, quality of abstract, and presentation of the work at the meeting as a poster and talk.  Finalists will be notified in late May - awardees will be announced at the 2011 RSA Closing Ceremony.

RSA EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Cristine Czachowski (Chair), Cynthia Dlugos, Sara Dolan, Kristin Hamre, Christian Hendershot, Stephen Kiefer, Andrea King, Darin Knapp, Robert Miranda, Sandra Mooney, Sarah Pedersen, Lisa Popp, Donita Robinson (Gordis Award Chair), Jennifer Thomas and Tamara Wall.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Before you begin, be sure to have the following materials ready for including:

1)     a copy of your original 1- page abstract – as submitted for poster presentation – 3050 character (w/spaces) limit – includes title, authors, affiliations and abstract. BE SURE TO SUBMIT YOUR POSTER ABSTRACT ONLINE BY THE JANUARY 10 DEADLINE.

2)     your expanded version of your abstract – 6000 character (w/spaces) limit – and 2000 character (w/spaces) limit for references

3)     STUDENTS ONLY – student verification letter from your advisor – 1500 character (w/spaces) limit

Please note that the regular 1-page abstract submitted to RSA for the presentation at the meeting will be used to help pick the finalists. Therefore, careful attention should be paid to the quality of both the 1-page abstract as well as the expanded version. The expanded abstract is limited to 6000 characters (w/spaces) and should include an Introduction that outlines the significance of the research, a Methods section, a Results section and a Discussion section. Figures should not be included. Because of the limited length of the abstract, references should be kept to a minimum (2000 characters w/spaces).

DEADLINE: Completed applications must be submitted by January 10, 2011.

NOTE:      Receiving a Student Merit / Junior Investigator Award does not preclude you from receiving an Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Award. You may apply for both awards.
